BlackBook: The Reinvention Issue

Posted by Dan | Posted on 10-09-2010

The September issue of BlackBook is out and selling like hotcakes! With Mark Ronson on the cover with his new bleach blonde hair and a feature on Tavi Gevinson’s first styling gig ever, the issue was bound to do well. Also inside you will find articles on Lindsey Lohan, N.E.R.D.’s new album, Patricia Clarkson, Drew Barrymore & Justin Long, and so much more. This issue is definitely one of my favorites!

NSA Showroom party

Posted by Dan | Posted on 31-08-2010

I knew it was going to be a good event, when I was sound-checking for the evening’s festivities when a bunch of guys walked onto the rooftop.  I had just got the sound right;  my 1200’s were playing real vinyl (no, not Sorato!) - “California” by Tupak.  Then one of the guys walked over and told me that ‘that guy over there is Dr Dre’s son.’
Obviously I then all but fluffed the next mix, which was a Florence and the Machines cover of You’ve Got The Love (curiously, my sound-check became a set at that instant) but it didn’t matter.  The slightest of nods of respect, and I was there!
Unfortunately, my DJing was going to be limited to the soundcheck that day, as it turns out that our real DJs (DJ Smiles Davis and his Majesty, Zen Freeman, were both Sorato users (my vinyl habit is a hard one to break) so I left them to it.  It turns out, well I knew already, that they are both awesome and killed it.
Anyway, we were launching the NSA showroom.  Special thanks to, genuinely, our best friends - Ben Sherman (who’s amazing new FW’10 collection was the talk of the evening) for putting down some dough for the bash and for providing the soccer balls for our vips.  Guys, your participation was well received.  I echo that sentiment for our friends at Belvedere and Hennessy who, equally, became the toast of the town that night.
Who was there?  Well, the ones that made the most noise….
1.  Flaunt Magazine.   Obviously… what do they feed those guys?
2.  MYMAG.  Well it was Creative Director - Warren Noronha’s birthday, so they had a ‘reason d’etre’
3. The Head of the BBC in America.  Just for being an upstanding Brit!
4. Wayne from Samsara.  The best mens’ silver accessories since Chrome Hearts and the guy behind the liquor at the bar?  Is this man off the hook or what?
5. Siobhan from Bananarama.
6. The Missus.  As usual, the most beautiful and coolest chick in the room.
7.  By contrast, a musical A-lister that came and who then stepped on someone’s toe, refused to apologize and when told that that just wasn’t cool… he left.  There are words for people like that, that I can’t repeat here.

Big thanks again to:

Atomic Floyd is raising the bar for sound technology and style when it comes to headphones with their world class acoustics and noise isolation design. These five sets of headphones are all uniquely carved out of intelligent metals and with thin, steel wall lining of the ear buds, the sound is impecable. They also feature dual filter technology, bass-rich sound, and twist to fit comfort. These headphones are great too if you are picky, like myself, because they offer five different styles, all with their own unique design.

The Kestrel

Posted by Dan | Posted on 14-07-2010

If you follow my blog, you’ll know all about Falcon.  If you don’t then get ready.
I was on a shoot in Big Sur and I mentioned Falcon to Jason O’Dell (a superb photographer by the way).  He and his assistant dropped their sandwiches when I told them that these guys were our friends and that we worked with them in various capacities (I must add that thankfully none of those capacities involved the actual building of bikes!).  They then proceeded to tell me what they knew about how Ian built this, the latest Falcon - The Kestrel.  And it was a lot (none of which made much sense to me as they were talking about overhead manifold sprockets and diagnostic bearing attaches, or something like that).
Now, the Bullet, being the first Falcon Motorcycle (that belongs to actor Jason Lee) has a place in history that can never be taken away, so it was a tall order for Ian Barry and Amarylis Knight to create something that could even compete with the Bullet, let alone surpass it.
Well in many people’s eyes, they did just that.
So bike lovers, wait until you’re alone, then get your tissues at the ready.  You’re gonna need them.
BTW… this video is in HD so go to full screen baby.

Vote Rob!

Are there no bounds to this man’s talents? If you read this blog often you’ll have ‘met’ my step brother Rob Madin (aka Brett Domino).
brett-stand-edit
Well now he’s a finalist in the Doritos King Of Ads competition.  Out of 2000 entries Rob’s entry is down to the last three, meaning that he’s a finalist.  All credit to all three finalists, but I think that Rob’s has the edge but that doesn’t mean anything unless everyone votes for him.  So my friends, simply click on the link below and help ensure that Rob gets the nod.

Dan, Patrick (Fall Out Boy), a dude from The Bravery and Arc Kid

Ah, yes, every now and again, it seems to come together.  I am pretty sure we brought the house down.
But… here’s what I love about this picture.  The dude from The Bravery… notice he’s so drunk that he forgot to do up his belt.
Angels & Kings.  ’Spect.
